1ST NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON MICROGRAVITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH

26th – 29th Nov 2017

Venue: Centre for Atmospheric Research, National Space Research and Development Agency (CAR-NASRDA), Kogi State University Campus, Anyigba, Nigeria.

THEME: “Microgravity and Environmental Research for Sustainable Development

Introduction

Environmental research, study and record environmental phenomena, as well as plan ways to mitigate the negative effect that human activity has on the environment. The environment in the context of this workshop includes the earth and space environment, which includes satellite altitudes.

The space environment is a microgravity environment which provides ample opportunities for the research community. Therefore, the space environment or simulated microgravity environment is indeed an excellent biological laboratory where cells, microbes, plants, macromolecules and samples from material science behave differently. Expectedly, therefore, better understanding and new insight on processes and phenomena can be derived from monitoring reactions and processes in the absence of the gravity  variable which has the potential to mask subtle observations. Studies have shown that Microgravity environment has the prospect of advancement for medicine, vaccine production, better agricultural yields and enhanced macromechanical devices manufacturing.

Sustainable development is the "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs." Sustainable development implies economic growth together with the protection of environmental quality, each reinforcing the other. This form of development has the potentials to create a stable relationship between human activities and the natural world without diminishing the prospect for future generations to enjoy a quality of life they deserve.

Consequently, Microgravity and environmental research can stimulates sustainable economic development and improves the present quality of life of people without jeopardizing the chance of the future generation. In line with this development, the   NASRDA Centre for Atmospheric Research is organizing a conference on “Microgravity and Environmental Research for Sustainable Development”. The workshop shall features presentation of papers on environmental research in life sciences, agriculture and health care.
